I totally concur with your assessment of Madsen's performance, her refusal to wink at the audience, her edge of plausible desperation. She should have had more great roles, certainly better roles than the girlfriend in Highlander II.
100% agree. (And I’ll happily relitigate the definition of “noir,” as I see Good Evil (noir as theme) under relentless assault by the forces of Bad Evil (noir as style), and say that here you’ve struck a blow for the Good guys.)

That soundtrack is a collaboration between Miles Davis and Blues immortal John Lee Hooker, and is inspired music even independently of the film.
As I read the excerpt you picked, I could hear Don Johnson's voice in the film. That's how good that adaptation was.

Saw this movie as a teenager. It was…formative. The soundtrack is amazing, too — Miles Davis and John Lee Hooker playing the blues together!
