God, I love this show. The style, the music, the humor, the intensity. The show loses appeal in later seasons but the 3rd Season episode "Shadow in the Dark" feels like a TV rift on Mann's Manhunter film.
I rewatched the entire series not so long ago and was surprised how well it held up. You're right, with time (and shameless imitation) it turned into a cliche, but once you get into it again, all the noise disappears and you get sucked in just like the first time.

Yeah! I'm sure the later seasons won't (can't) be as good...but it's a hell of a first season.
